US Will Allow Roughly 500,000 Venezuelan Immigrants to Work in the US

The Biden administration is announcing the provision of temporary legal status to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans currently residing in the United States. This move promptly allows them to seek employment opportunities. This decision comes as the administration faces an increasing influx of individuals escaping Venezuela and other regions, with their sights set on reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Department of Homeland Security intends to grant Temporary Protected Status to approximately 472,000 Venezuelans who have arrived in the country by July 31, simplifying the process for them to obtain work authorization in the United States. This move aligns with the demands of Democratic mayors and governors who are grappling with an increased influx of migrants under their care.

This is in addition to the roughly 242,700 Venezuelans who already qualified for temporary status before the announcement made on Wednesday.

The significance of these protections for Venezuelans is underscored by the fact that they constitute a substantial portion of the migrants arriving in the United States in recent years.

Venezuela has faced a profound political, economic, and humanitarian crisis over the past decade, driving at least 7.3 million people to migrate and rendering essential goods unaffordable for those who remain. While the majority of those who fled found refuge in neighboring Latin American countries, many have started coming to the United States in the last three years, often braving the perilous Darien Gap, a treacherous jungle stretch in Panama.

It’s important to note that Venezuelans arriving in the U.S. after July 31 of this year will not be eligible for this protection, and those who are eligible must apply to secure it.
