Express Entry Category-Based Selection: Trades Occupations

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has developed category-based selection criteria for Express Entry lotteries. One of the categories includes occupations in trades such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors. The selection criteria were determined based on labor market projections, consultations with IRCC partners and stakeholders, and discussions with provincial and territorial governments.

The implementation of category-based selection draws has been expected since June 2022, following modifications made by the Government of Canada to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. These changes have allowed for the selection of immigrants based on specific qualities that align with Canada’s economic goals, including relevant work experience to address labor market shortages and proficiency in the French language.
