Canada Introduces New Travel Exemption for Accredited Foreign Representatives

Canada has introduced a new exemption to border closures and travel restrictions for accredited foreign representatives and their family members.

The incoming official must have a passport containing diplomatic acceptance, consular acceptance or official acceptance issued by Global Affairs Canada on behalf of the Government of Canada.

They must also be one of the following:

  • Accredited diplomat,
  • Consular officer,
  • Representative or official of another country, of the United Nations, or of any international organization of which Canada is a member.

The foreign representatives are required to obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) prior to their arrival in Canada.

The TRV must be coded D-1 or O-1 to be accepted by a Canada Border Services Agency officer.

Exemptions To Travel Restrictions

Canada has provided exemptions to travel restrictions for:

  • Immediate family members of citizens and permanent residents, provided they are staying in Canada for at least 15 days.
  • Some international students approved for study permits on or before March 18
  • Certain temporary workers
  • Foreign nationals approved for permanent residence on or before March 18.
  • Accredited officials.
  • Protected persons.
  • Those for whom entry is deemed in the national interest.
  • Transit passengers.
  • Crew members and foreign nationals entering Canada to become crew members.
  • Members of the Canadian Forces.
  • Some Canadian citizens travelling on a foreign passport.
