Express Entry 2019 official report: A record-setting year

Express Entry

The 2019 Express Entry Year-End Report was released on June 29, 2020, and the findings show that 2019 was a record-setting year for Express Entry. In 2019, Canada admitted 109,595 principal applicants and their accompanying family members as permanent residents through Express Entry. This is a big jump from the 92,229 admitted in the previous year.

Despite the increase in overall admissions, the number of ITAs issued in 2019 fell slightly compared to the previous year. 85,300 ITAs were issued throughout 2019, compared to 89,800 in 2018.

Introduced in 2015, Express Entry is an online system used to manage immigration applications through three immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, and Canadian Experience Class. As well, many Provincial Nominee Program streams are aligned with Express Entry.

The 2019 report showed the fifth consecutive year of growth for permanent residents admitted to Canada through Express Entry.

The growth of Express Entry is understandable, considering Canada has recently been aiming to increase the number of immigrants admitted to the country annually. In Canada’s most recent Immigration Levels Plan, the government announced plans to welcome more than 1 million new permanent residents between 2020 and 2022.

With increasing quotas, it will be no surprise if the growth of Express Entry continues into the future. However, data for 2020 is expected to vary dramatically from prior years due to the impacts of COVID-19 on Canadian immigration.
