Canada has moved to reduce the time allowed under the Express Entry system for submitting a complete application after receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

As of Tuesday, June 29, candidates must submit a full application within 60 days, down from 90 days. Candidates who received an ITA before June 29 still have 90 days to submit their applications.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is aiming to reach an ambitious target of 401,000 new immigrants in 2021, as Canada emerges from the COVID-19 crisis.

This explains the reason behind the move to reduce the application window, ensuring candidates who receive an ITA submit their paperwork in a timely manner.

IRCC has issued continued high numbers of ITAs during the Express Entry draws so far this year, including one draw in which a staggering 27,000 invitations were issued.

Aside from the February mega-draw, officials have also regularly issued in excess of 6,000 ITAs every two weeks, in targeted draws aimed at Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an immigration system implemented by Canadian immigration authorities (IRCC) on January 1, 2015 which manages skilled worker applications under Federal Economic programs. This includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program the Canada Experience Class and parts of the Provincial Nomination Programs.

Stakeholders expect to see continued high numbers of invitations issued as Canada builds towards its target of more than 400,000 new permanent residents in 2021, with CRS scores likely to drop.

With the coronavirus crisis striking in March 2020, Canada switched to program-specific draws aimed at Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Program candidates. This had the affect of significantly increasing the number of individual draws beyond previous years.

What Should Candidates Do Next?

Given the coronavirus crisis, it is difficult to predict what CRS scores will be required to secure an ITA in 2021. Scores have dropped as low as 75 for CEC draws.
