Are New Canadian PR Holders Allowed Entry to Canada?

Study

Many individuals within immigration have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic crisis that started in March 2020. Due to travel restrictions to stop the spread of the virus, not only were many new applicants affected but so were many Canadian permanent residents who are looking to return to Canada. Here is the start of what Canadian PR holders should know about traveling to Canada after travel restrictions have been lifted!

Latest Canadian Travel Restrictions

As of Feb 3rd, new travel restrictions took effect adding to previous restrictions which were mandatory by all visitors or PR holders. Along with the negative COVID-19 test that is required before boarding your flight to Canada and 14-day quarantining, there are a few new travel restrictions to stop the virus spread:

  1. Direct flights suspended
  2. Flights will only land in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver airports
  3. Mandatory PCR testing at the airport for people returning to Canada
  4. 3-day mandatory hotel stay at travelers expense
  5. Additional test on Day 10
  6. Non-essential travelers to show a negative test before entry at the land border (begins Feb 15, 2021)

Canadian PR Holders Allowed Entry Once Travel Restrictions are Lifted

As stated by Minister Mendicino, those considered Canadian PR holders who have not been able to come to Canada because of COVID-19 travel restrictions will be allowed into the country once travel restrictions are lifted even if their confirmations have expired.

Many international permanent residency holders who received a valid confirmation of permanent residency (COPR) after travel restrictions were announced on March 18, 2020, were facing expiring visas which usually cannot be extended.

Further explained, “applicants with expiring documents may eventually be able to have their COPRs extended once they’re permitted to come to Canada,” with more information coming in the future so stay tuned!
